WP5 - Validation Tests

This WP is dedicated to the creation of datasets to be used for validation purposes in the other WPs where the computational tools and physical models are developed. To this purpose dedicated experimental campaigns will be performed representative of the ditching phase of helicopters and aircrafts.

For the helicopters, particular attention is paid in understanding and measuring the fluid-structure interaction phenomena occurring when the floater impacts the water surface as well as on the force exchanges between the floater and the hull. Free-drop tests with different ditching velocities and trajectories will be performed.

For the aircrafts, three different experimental setups will be considered. The first two will complement the experimental activities performed in the SMAES project by investigating the effects of the double curvature of the body surface on ventilation and separation phenomena occurring on the rear of the aircraft, by accounting for the flexibility of the upper structure on the fluid-structure interaction and by determining the ballistic limit for rupture of the aluminum plates. In order to avoid the scaling effects, those tests will be performed at the High Speed Ditching facility, which allows quasi full scale velocities (40-45 m/s). The third setup will perform fully guided (assigned dynamic pitch angle) ditching tests on scaled fuselage with the aim of achieving accurate and reliable data on the resulting hydrodynamic loads. The effects of the wave will be included in the free-drop tests of helicopter and in the controlled ditching tests of aircraft fuselage.
